Fonda Del Barrio

This restaurant was so delicious and unique. There are a lot of Mexican restaurants in San Diego but not many that focus on southern Mexico cuisine. The server told us they focus on oaxacan food and that chile en nogada is the national food of mexico. Everything was delicious. I loved the mango habanero aguachile, even if it was too spicy for me. The chile en nogada was sooo creamy and delicious. I loved the pomegranate to balance all the creamy umami flavor. My partner had the fish which was very nice and light. We also tried several cocktails which all came with fresh fruit, but my favorite was the watermelon margarita which actually had pieces of fresh watermelon. Our friends had the filet mignon and the chile relleno which they said were noth amazing.

Our friends recommended Fonda del Barrio and now we owe them a dinner there! Our family of 4 dined there on July 23 for a birthday dinner and upon walking in, were greeted by Jessica who is a role model for hospitality. She was authentic and friendly and it was so great to have as our server. Ellie was our hostess and checked on us and added to our great experience. The food? OMG; so flavorful, great presentation, all wonderful. We have added Fonda del Barrio to our list of top restaurants in SD and will recommend to everyone. Can't wait to go back!

Solid restaurant offering well prepared food with a creative bar program and generously priced wine list. Standout dishes were Chile en Nogada & Tiradito de Salmon; yet everything that arrived at the table was thoughtfully prepared. The atmosphere is lovely, and the staff are very attentive. If you're coming on the weekends consider reservations and ride share as parking can be difficult.

The best fancy Mexican food we've had! We went for a special occasion on a Latina friend's recommendation, and La Fonda didn't disappoint! The flavors were just right (I don't like salty), and the texture was perfect on everything- steak, octopus, tortilla, poblano...

Fonda Del Barrio is a hidden gem a little out of the way of top restaurants. But this area is a live with great food and ambiance. As a rival to the Italian restaurant across the street, Fonda Del Barrio is a true authentic taste of Mexico. We started off with Mango Habanero Aguachile As suggested by a local tap room. Next was the Sopa de Tortilla Huasteca that was made table side and was fresh and delicious. For our entree we had Filete de Res Porfirio : Filet mignon stuffed with Panela & Cotija cheeses in a creamy squash blossom reduction served with garlic and seasonal vegetables, crowned with leeks. I know Felet Mignon is supposed to be tender and flavorful, but this was beyond the norm. So much flavor and tender enough to only use a fork. Melt in your mouth steak. Our other entree was the Traditional grilled skirt steak, poblano peppers and spring onions served with refried beans & enmoladas ( mini mole enchiladas) The steak was just as tender and flavorful. With a glass of wine from the Ville and fabulous food, this was a perfect night. Thank you to Rudy who helped us along with our food journey.
